Hilda Frances Young: Community connector

I play Ladies night at Roanoke on a regular basis as  my cart partner is  Esther Gaudet, a friend from many aspects of my life. We have supported each other through life issues and do not take golf too seriously! I play Ladies night at Petawawa Golf club as my husband and I have a joint membership. He gets  his monies worth as he plays 9 times a week. I just try to play a couple of  times and not disgrace myself! It is my way of finding out what he is up to! It helps when he talks about the  conditions of the   course etc if I have actually played there in the previous week!

I have learnt that it is wise to listen and watch as many people play at both courses.  Saying one had a good game is relative! There is friendly rivalry between the courses.  I like playing at Roanoke as it is flat. The hazards are the trees and some ditches. I actually will drive the cart at Roanoke. At my advanced age I am no longer afraid of admitting my weak points as most people can figure them out anyway. So ladies at Petawawa that read this I am too tense when I drive to feel comfortable driving the cart down the hill at Petawawa. I have problems with depth perception so appreciate being the passenger. I did not get my drivers license until I was in my 30s as I was too stressed out.  I appreciate the support of the ladies at both courses.

Over the years I have met some interesting personalities who play golf to relieve stress. Many of the strong players are accommodating to the weaker ones as Ladies night is a social event. Each person keeps their own score. I have learnt the hard way that golf is a game between the ears and one has to focus on the ball and ignore everything else around to have any chance of a good shot.
