The Christian season of Lent

St. George’s chapel celebrates Ash Wednesday with 20 people attending the noon hour service.

Padre Hackbush describing the Imposition of Ashes
  • On Wednesday March 2nd at 12 noon Ash Wednesday was celebrated at St. George’s chapel Garrison Petawawa. The two padres leading the service were Padre Michael Hackbush (Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada) and Padre Murray Bateman ( Anglican church of Canada)
  • Padre Hackbush introduced the congregation to a new tradition as her covered the brass cross with purple material . He stated that it is to experience during the season of Lent a “fast for the senses”.
  • He gave the following extra background:
  • Some also encourage not saying or singing the word “Alleluia” for the season. Also, that we not sing bright sounding music and refrain from overly ‘praise’ songs. All worship is praise to be sure but through this season we refrain from singing the Gloria or other canticles of praise, again and overly joyous music, again, a fast for the senses (or , a fast for our ears.)
